Rolled Leather Quick-Release Dog Collar
A collar that doesn't fit isn't just uncomfortable — it's unsafe. Too tight, you've got a choking hazard. Too loose, you've got a dog that's slipped the lead. We've been making collars in Colorado since 1995, and we've seen every shape and size of dog walk through our shop. Use this guide to find the right neck size for your breed, then double-check by measuring.
How to measure your dog's neck
- Use a soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler).
- Wrap it around the middle of your dog's neck — where the collar will sit.
- Snug, but not tight. Two fingers should fit comfortably between the tape and your dog's neck.
- Write that number down. That's your neck size in inches.
- When choosing a collar, pick a size where your measurement falls in the middle of the range — not the very end.

Size by breed
These are starting points. Every dog is an individual — measure to confirm.
Toy & Tiny Breeds (Neck: 8"–12")
- Chihuahua
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Pomeranian
- Maltese
- Toy Poodle
- Papillon
Recommended width: 1/2" or 5/8". Anything wider overwhelms a small neck.
Small Breeds (Neck: 10"–14")
- Dachshund
- Jack Russell Terrier
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- Boston Terrier
- Miniature Schnauzer
- Shih Tzu
- French Bulldog (small)
Recommended width: 5/8" or 3/4".
Medium Breeds (Neck: 13"–18")
- Beagle
- Border Collie
- Cocker Spaniel
- Australian Shepherd
- English Bulldog
- Brittany
- Whippet
Recommended width: 3/4" or 1".
Large Breeds (Neck: 16"–22")
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Vizsla
- Boxer
- Pointer
- Husky
- Doberman
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
Recommended width: 1" or 1-1/4". For pullers, consider a martingale.
Giant Breeds (Neck: 20"–28"+)
- Great Dane
- Mastiff (English, Bull, Cane Corso)
- Saint Bernard
- Newfoundland
- Rottweiler
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Anatolian Shepherd
- Great Pyrenees
Recommended width: 1-1/4" or 1-1/2". A wider collar distributes pressure across a powerful neck and looks proportional. See our For Big Dogs collection.
A few tips from our workshop
- Puppies grow fast. If your puppy's neck is between sizes, size up — they'll grow into it. Adjustable collars give you 3–4 inches of room.
- Coat type matters. Double-coated breeds (Huskies, Goldens, Bernese) measure larger when their winter coat is in. Re-measure seasonally.
- The two-finger rule isn't optional. A collar that's too tight can damage the trachea. Too loose and a determined dog will back out of it.
- Leather stretches a little. Our full-grain American leather will give about 1/4" with regular wear. Climbing-grade nylon rope and waterproof PVC-coated nylon hold their size.
- Hardware matters as much as fit. Every collar we make uses European steel D-rings and Japanese YKK polyacetal buckles — the parts that actually have to hold under load.

Soft, supple leather that won't flatten or crack — with the quick-release buckle you actually want to use.
Why we built it this way
Rolled leather sits softer on a dog's neck than flat leather — no edges, no pressure points, no rubbing under the chin. We use full-grain American leather, hand-rolled and saddle-stitched in Denver, so the collar conforms to your dog's neck over weeks instead of breaking down over months.
The quick-release buckle is a YKK polyacetal side-release with a steel D-ring — the same hardware trainers and working-dog handlers trust. One-handed on. One-handed off. No struggling with a belt buckle when your dog is wet, cold, or just done with the walk.
What's in it
Full-grain American leather, vegetable-tanned and rolled by hand
YKK polyacetal quick-release buckle — corrosion-proof, won't freeze in winter, won't rust in surf
Marine-grade steel D-ring, welded closed
Saddle-stitched ends with waxed thread — won't unravel like glue-and-rivet construction
Made in Denver, Colorado by the same small team since 1995
How it ages
Full-grain leather darkens and softens with wear. After a few months of walking, swimming, hiking — your dog's collar starts to look like it belongs to your dog. That's the point. Cheap leather goes the other way: stiff, then cracked, then trash. Ours doesn't.
Sizing
Wrap a soft tape measure around your dog's neck where the collar would sit — snug, with room for two fingers underneath. That number is the size you want. Between sizes? Go up. Leather softens and shapes to your dog's neck over the first 30 days.
XS: 5/8" width, 13"–14" neck
S: 5/8" width, 15"–16" neck
M: 5/8" width, 17"–18" neck
L: 3/4" width, 18"–20" neck
XL: 3/4" width, 20"–22" neck
Care
Wipe with a damp cloth after wet walks. Condition with leather balm every 3–6 months. Don't soak it; don't run it through the washer.
Backed by our 1-year guarantee — if it fails under normal use within a year, we make it right. No fine print.
Full-grain leather: Wipe clean with a damp cloth and let it air-dry away from direct heat. Condition it now and then with a leather conditioner to keep it supple. The leather will darken and soften as your dog wears it.
Climbing rope & nylon: Hand wash in cool water with a mild soap and hang to dry.
Waterproof PVC: Rinse with fresh water after the beach, lake or mud and wipe dry.
Check the hardware and stitching regularly, and replace any collar or leash that shows wear.
